This Trans Day of Remembrance, we’re calling for action to honour our loved ones, and the recentering of our movement around Black and Indigenous trans women and femmes, sex workers, and our youth.

Hate-motivated violence isn’t an abstract phenomenon. It is the result of our history, culture, and politics, and it is a tool of racial capitalism and settler colonialism.

Trans Day of Remembrance was born from the effort to honour Rita Hester and Chanelle Pickett, who were murdered at the intersection of transmisogyny and anti-Blackness.

Each year since, impassioned trans siblings have made a collective practice of remembering, combing news reports and taking community calls to list the names we read.

And, each year, transfemicides account for the startling majority of reports. This year, close to all we lost were racialized, and nearly half were sex workers.

Our movement must put our most marginalised first and never compromise in defending these lives.

350 trans murders were recorded this year, rising to 427 with suicides. We know so many more are unrecorded.

Names of our trans siblings lost to genocides in Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan, the Congo, and across colonised borders will go unread at our vigils.

Here in so-called BC, the coroner’s office makes no systemic report of our crises of health and discrimination, or the intersections between trans deaths and the toxic supply, carceral measures, and anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism.

If action is any balm for our immense grief and anger on this day, please write to the Minister of Health, joining our call for trans women and femmes to receive the healthcare they need, and for coroner’s reports of the deaths of our loved ones.

Please also take time to engage with the organisations which support trans sex workers locally, including @pacesociety & @swan_vancouver; @unyayouth, which makes space for Two-Spirit youth; and mutual aid initiatives which are accepting warm clothes and camping supplies for our unhoused siblings to brave the winter.

- Wait times for specialized clinics & surgeons can be months to years.
- Complete access to medical transition cuts down our risk of suicidality by 62%.
- 2/3 of trans people in BC don’t have access to the healthcare we need.

Expansions to hormone therapy are coming to BC:
here’s what you need to know. 🏳️‍⚧️

Through community-led advocacy, gender-affirming hormone therapy coverage, along with reproductive, menopausal, and diabetes coverage will see expansions next spring as part of BC’s new Pharmacare agreement. This a big win for trans healthcare, & we have much more work to do.

As of now, just three hormone therapy drug types have barrier-free coverage in BC. In April, this number will grow, giving trans women and families more support to pay for what they need, without having to choose between groceries & essential care.

While coverage details are yet to be announced beyond progesterone and estradiol, we continue to urge that medications supporting the health and well-being of trans & nonbinary people are made available comprehensively & without exclusions.

Trans & nonbinary people rely on these therapies to live healthy lives, participate in their communities, & stay safe from gender-based violence.

Although we celebrate this win, we’re vigilant that gender-affirming health care, reproductive rights, and trans youth are still under attack.

We’re at a frightening crossroads.

Evidence shows that the recent wave of Conservative anti-trans policies, including legislation proposed in Alberta, will put the lives of trans youth in danger. BC is no exception.

Parties on the right look to exploit fear and ignorance to take housing, healthcare, & human rights away from our communities.

Queer & trans people need to show up for each other, our futures, & our kids.

Society for Advocacy for Gender-Affirming Healthcare (SAGAH) Stands Firm Against Hate Movements Targeting Trans Rights

The Society for Advocacy for Gender-Affirming Healthcare (SAGAH) stands united with queer community, civil society, and allies in pushing back against movements aimed at restricting the basic human rights of vulnerable people on Turtle Island. One year ago today, nationwide hate rallies attempted to block access to life-saving, evidence-based healthcare for trans youth and to make schools less safe for at-risk trans students. Once again this year, far-right groups are gathering with the same hateful agenda.

Today, we join together in national counter-protests to deliver a clear message: there is no space for hate in our communities.

These rallies come at a pivotal time for BC. Tomorrow, on September 21st, the provincial election campaign begins, with an emboldened BC Conservative Party positioning itself as a serious threat to the rights of trans youth, 2SLGBTQ+ communities, and other vulnerable people in the province. BC Conservative leader John Rustad has made deeply troubling statements, likening anti-bullying policies for queer and trans students to residential schools, dismissing the importance of gender-affirming healthcare, and failing to condemn a former candidate’s comments comparing gay people to “perverts” and “groomers.”

Now, more than ever, it is critical to stand against hate. Instead of spreading division, we must unite around the shared vision of a fairer, more inclusive, and healthier community for us all. SAGAH urges everyone in so-called British Columbia to reject hate today, organize their communities, and make their voices heard on October 19th.
